Technical Information

Following are the technical specifications and physical properties for these size fibers: 30mil, 40mil, 60mil, 80mil, 120mil, *4001 & *1048 jacketed fiber.

*4001 is a 40mil monofillament fiber in a protective polyethylene jacket.

*1048 is a tight bundle of 48 10mil fibers in a protective polyethylene jacket.

The term mil is used to define in thousandths of an inch

The plastic optical fibers mentioned above are of a concentric double-layer structure, consisting of a core and a thin clad. The cladding, of a fluropolymer composition, acts like a tight skin that surrounds the core. The core, which actually conducts the light, is made of a high purity polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin

The process whereby plastic optical fiber transmits light is essentially the same as the process by which water travels through a pipe. The clad traps any light entering the core, where the light can be sent or received at either end of the fiber's length. The light entering one end of the fiber travels through the core escaping at the other end.

The angle and/or numerical aperture at which this fiber can send or receive the light at it's end is o. 5 and the light acceptance angle is 60 degrees.

This graph shows the curves of transmission loss of both the Standard Glass Optical Fiber (low loss type)and the Standard Plastic Optical Fiber, within the visible light ray range.

This clearly shows that the Plastic Optical Fiber is optimized for emitting visible light.

Based on the graph above, the graph below shows how 100% pure white light loses a percentage of it's residual quantity of light emitted, after transmitted for a specified distance. Plastic optical fiber has less loss over the distance of the fiber run.

NO HEAT - NO U.V. EMMITTANCE

Some other features of this Plastic Optical Fiber include it's ability to transmit the full spectrum of visible light without any heat transfer. In fact Plastic Optical Fiber transmits while blocking infrared and ultraviolet rays!

These properties make this Plastic Optical Fiber ideal for illuminating rare artifacts and artworks, fresh foods that are easily damaged by heat as well as paper and other textiles that can suffer discoloration.
